Armageddon In More Ways Than One

People tend to think of Armageddon in the biblical context. A great war of the end times - cataclysmic and terminal. That scenario is of course a growing possibility with our entry into a second nuclear age. More countries than ever have the bomb, and some have even threatened to use it. The complicated spider’s web of proliferation these days makes the cold war stand-off between the US and Soviet Union seem almost pedestrian by comparison. The threat possibilities now are a lot more difficult to both predict and contain.

Environmental Sustainability - A Mirage?

Introduction

Trying to have matured adults agree on one concrete definition of Sustainability , is by far one of the toughest jobs. Though various organizations and thought leaders have tried their best to explore, analyze and beat it down to one precise meaning without success, there seems to be the common thread of Environment, Society and the Economy, running through them all. Northwest Environment Watch, a not-for-profit research and communication center based in Seattle, has according to me given a definition that is by far the closest to appropriate. It said that sustainability is “an economy and way of life in which both people and nature flourish, a culture that can last.” The Executive Order 00-07, signed by Gov. John

Kitzhaber of the State of Oregon, in May of 2000 says that, Sustainability means using, developing and protecting resources at a rate and in a manner that enables people to meet their current needs and also provides that future generations can meet their own needs. It also goes on a step further to say that, “Sustainability requires simultaneously meeting environmental, economic and community needs.” This again almost co-relates to the Northwest Environment Watch s stand. Let us now venture to explore three of the most critical influencers, and analyze their roles in achieving the goal of sustainability.

Is This The Effects Of Global Warming?

There s been a lot of hype recently about the effects of global warming and the impact of mankind on our environment. Living in Chamonix I have witnessed the worst winter I can remember in terms of snow levels. It was a very slow start to the season with Christmas holiday makers only just getting a dusting of snow over the festive break to keep them entertained with just the odd flurry from then on for the next month. The expected snow falls that kept appearing on the local weather guides failed to arrive and there was just the occasional dump through out the season to appease the powder hungry skiers and snowboarders.

Australian Politicians At Loggerheads Over Climate Change Policies

I am amazed how the Howard Government continues it’s stoic stance on the refusal to participate or comply with the Kyoto Protocol. Using economic driven reasons for this, is fast becoming a paper thin mask, for what the real purpose of this is, and that is to retain political power, with promises of economic reforms for Climate Control, which have come too late and too little.

As an Australian citizen I am embarrassed by the slamming Australia received in the International arena at the recent UN meetings in Europe. Australia needs to make a much tougher and more immediate target to bring the reduction of our Greenhouse Gas Emissions down to an acceptable level. Rudd and Garret however, have taken a

tough stance against this Governments inaction and seem to be making it their main political drive, coming up to the Federal Elections. Whilst we all realize that these changes cannot occur overnight and will in fact, take a great deal of forward economic planning, I am of the opinion that most Australian citizens are so concerned about the effects of Climate Change, that most people I have spoken to about this topic, are not concerned about the personal cost to themselves. If it means that we all give another dollar or two in taxes for this specific purpose, then so be it! After all, we are all acutely aware of the effects Climate Change is having in our country and

Global Warming - What are International Air Freight Companies Doing to Alleviate It?

The international air freight industry is at the center of some controversy surrounding global warning and what can be done in order to prevent it from increasing?

For many years it has only been scientists, environmental charities and eco warriors who have been concerned about the greenhouse effect and for the majority of us we did not think that us or our grandchildren would be troubled by the results of us polluting the earth.

But things have now changed and most world leader’s have put the environmental problem at the top of their agendas and this has moved the subject very much into main stream public debate. There have been green taxes implemented as well as getting people to buy unleaded
